సుందరకాండ.
అథ పంచమ స్సర్గః

తతస్స మధ్యంగత మంశుమన్తమ్ జ్యోత్స్నావితానం మహదుద్వమన్తమ్|
దదర్శ ధీమాన్దివి భానుమన్తమ్ గోష్ఠే వృషం మత్తమివ భ్రమన్తమ్||1||

స|| తతః సః ధీమాన్ మధ్యం గతం అంశుమన్తం ఉద్యమంతం మహత్ జ్యోత్స్నావితానమ్ దివి భానుమంతం గోష్ఠే భ్రమన్తం వృషమివ దదర్శ||

Then that intelligent Hanuman saw the luminous lord, the Moon, rise to the middle of the sky spreading a canopy of light like the Sun in the sky. He was looking like an intoxicated mighty bull in the cowshed (amidst a herd of cows)

లోకస్య పాపాని వినాశయన్తమ్ మహోదధిం చాపి సమేధయన్తమ్|
భూతాని సర్వాణి విరాజయన్తమ్ దదర్శ శీతాంశుమథాభియాన్తమ్||2||

స|| అథ అభియాన్తం లోకస్య పాపాని వినాశయన్తం మహోదద్ధిం సమేధయన్తం చాపి సర్వాణి భూతాని విరాజయన్తం శీతాంశుం దదర్శ||

Then the Hanuman moving forward saw the Moon spreading his light as if to ward off the worlds agony, augmenting the ocean to swell, and illuminating all the creatures.

యా భాతి లక్శ్మీ ర్భువిమన్దరస్థా తదా ప్రదోషేశు చ సాగరస్థా|
తథైవ తోయేషు చపుష్కరస్థా రరాజ సా చారునిశాకరస్థా ||3||

స|| భువి యా మన్దరస్థా లక్ష్మీః భాతి తథా ప్రదోషేషు సాగరస్థా తథా తోయేషు పుష్కరస్థా సా చారునిశాకరతస్థా దదర్శ||

The splendor of the Moon was seen like the splendor found on the Mandara mountain , like the splendor found on the ocean at dusk, like the splendor found in the water on the lotus leaves in the lakes.

హంసోయథా రాజత పఞ్జరస్థః సింహో యథా మందరకందరస్థః|
వీరో యథా గర్విత కుఞ్జరస్థః చంద్రోఽపి బభ్రాజ తథాంబరస్థః||4||

స||యథా రాజత పఞ్జరస్థః హంసః యథా మందరకన్దరస్థః సింహః యథా గర్విత కుఞ్జరస్థః వీరః తథా అంబరస్థః చంద్రః అపి భభ్రాజ ||

The Moon shone like the swan in the silver cage, like the Lion in the cave on the mountain Mandara, like the proud hero sitting on an elephant.

స్థితః కకుద్మానివ తీక్ష్ణ శృఙ్గో మహాచలశ్వేత ఇవోచ్ఛశృఙ్గః|
హస్తీవ జాంబూనద బద్ధశృఙ్గో రరాజ చంద్రః పరిపూర్ణశృఙ్గః||5||

స|| పరిపూర్ణ శృఙ్గః చంద్రః తీక్ష్ణ శృఙ్గః స్థితః కకుద్మానివ, శ్వేతః ఉచ్చశృఙ్గః మహాచలః (ఇవ) జామ్బూనద బద్ధ శృఙ్గః హస్తి ఇవ రరాజ||

The full moon with its horn like spot was looking like a bull with sharp horns, like the Himalayas with its tall peaks, like an elephant with its gold plated tusks.

వినష్ట శీతాంబుతుషార పఙ్కో మహాగ్రహగ్రాహ వినష్ఠ పఙ్కః|
ప్రకాశ లక్ష్మ్యాశ్రయనిర్మలాఙ్కో రరాజ చన్ద్రో భగవాన్ శశాఙ్కః ||6||

 

స||వినష్ట శీతాంబు తుషార పఙ్కః మహాగ్రహాగ్రాహ వినష్ట పఙ్కః ప్రకాశ లక్ష్మ్యాశ్రయ నిర్మలాంకః శశాఙ్కః భగవాన్ చన్ద్రః రరాజ||

The Moon with its stain shone with graceful radiance like the shining water drops on the lotus leaf rid of its dew, or the one resplendent with the removal of moral impurities by the great planets.

శిలాతలం ప్రాప్య యథా మృగేన్ద్రో మహారణం ప్రాప్య యథా గజేన్ద్రః|
రాజ్యం సమాసాద్య యథా నరేన్ద్రః తథాప్రకాశో విరరాజ చన్ద్రః||7||

స|| శిలాతలం ప్రాప్య యథా మృగేన్ద్రః మహారణం ప్రాప్య యథా గజేన్ద్రః రాజ్యం సమాసాద్య యథా నరేణ్ద్రః తథా ప్రకాశః చన్ద్రః రరాజ||

The Moon shone bright like the lion, the king of animals on the top of a rock. He shone like the lord of the elephants in the deep forest, and like the king who regained his kingdom.

ప్రకాశ చన్ద్రోదయ నష్ఠదోషః ప్రవృత్తరక్షః పిసితాశదోషః|
రామాభిరామేరితిచిత్తదోషః స్వర్గ ప్రకాశో భగవాన్ ప్రదోషః||8||
స|| యదా భగవాన్ ప్రదోషః స్వర్గప్రకాశః తదా చంద్రోదయ ప్రకాశాత్ (తిమిర) దోషః నష్టః ప్రవృత్త రక్షః పిశితాశదోషః రామాభిరామేరితి చిత్త దోషః (భవతి)||

As the Moon at dusk spread his brilliance, then the darkness was dispelled , dark deeds of cannibals disappear, and the love instincts of ladies lost in anger of love are incited.

తంత్రీస్వనాః కర్ణసుఖాః ప్రవృత్తాః స్వపయంతి నార్యః పతిభిః సువృత్తా|
నక్తాంచరా శ్చాపి తథా ప్రవృత్తా నిహర్తు మత్యద్భుతరౌద్రవృత్తాః||9||

 

స|| తంత్రీ స్వనాః కర్ణసుఖాః ప్రవృత్తాః | సువృతాః నార్యః పతిభిః స్వపన్తి| నక్తం చరాః అత్యత్భుత రౌద్రవృత్తాః అపి విహర్తుం ప్రవృత్తాః||

Sounds of instruments pleasing to the ears are being heard. Chaste ladies are sleeping with their husbands. The night creatures beagn to roam about exhibiting their arrogance.

మత్తప్రమత్తాని సమాకులాని రథాశ్వభద్రాసన సంకులాని|
వీరశ్రియాచాపి సమాకులాని దదర్శ ధీమాన్ స కపిః కులాని||10||

స|| ధీమాన్ వీరః హనుమాన్ సః శ్రియా సమాకులాని కులాని మత్తప్రమత్తాని చ రథాశ్వభద్రాసన సంకులాని అపి దదర్శ||

Intelligent Hanuman saw in those prosperous houses demons intoxicated with wealth. He also saw chariots with comfortable seats drawn by horses ( in those houses).

పరస్పరం చాధిక మక్షిపన్తి భుజాంశ్చ పీనా నధిక్షిపన్తి|
మత్త ప్రలాపా నధి విక్షిపన్తి దృఢాని చాపాని చవిక్షిపన్తి||11||

స|| (తే) పరస్పరం అధికం అక్షిపన్తి | పీనాన్ భుజాన్ చ అధికం క్షిపన్తి | మత్తప్రలాపాన్ అధి విక్షిపన్తి | మత్తాని అన్యోన్యం అధిక్షిపన్తి చ||

They ( the Rakshasas in those prosperous houses) were intoxicated. They were blabbering ridiculing each other, They were boisterously patting each others shoulders and even quarrelling with each other in the intoxication.

రక్షాంసి వక్షాంసి చ విక్షిపంతి గాత్రాణీ కాన్తాసు చ విక్షిపంతి |
రూపాణి చిత్రాణి చ విక్షిపంతి ధృఢాని చాపాని చ విక్షిపంతి||12||

స|| (తే) వక్షాంసి విక్షిపన్తి కాన్తాసు గాత్రాణి విక్షిపన్తి చ | రక్షాంసి దృఢాని చాపాని విక్షిపన్తి | చిత్రాణి రూపాణి విక్షిపన్తి చ||

They are expanding their chests sportively touching their women. The Rakshasas drawing their strong bows were assuming wonderful forms.

దదర్శ కాన్తాశ్చ సమాలభంత్యః తథాపరాః తత్ర పునః స్వపన్త్యః|
సురూపవక్త్రాశ్చ తథా హసంత్యః క్రుద్ధాః పరాశ్చాపి వినిశ్ర్వసంత్యః||13||

స|| సమాలభంత్యః కాన్తాః చ తత్ర అపరాః పునః స్వపన్త్యః| తే సురూప వక్త్రాః చ| తథా హసంత్యః క్రుద్ధాః చ|| అపరాః వినిః శ్వసంత్యః||

Among women who collected there some were sleeping, some have beautiful countenance,some are angry and some are laughing, some others are sighing.

మహాగజైశ్చాపి తథా నదద్భిః సుపూజితైశ్చాపి తథా సుసద్భిః|
రరాజ వీరైశ్చ వినిశ్ర్వసద్భిః హ్రదోభుజఙ్గై రివ నిశ్ర్వసద్భిః||14||

 

స|| తథా నదద్భిః సుపూజితైః మహగజైః చ , హ్రదో నిఃశ్వ్రసద్భిః భుజంగైరివ వినిఃశ్ర్వసద్భిః వీరైః చ రరాజ||

There were huge respected elephants making sounds. There were warriors also sighing like snakes hissing in a lake.

బుద్ధి ప్రధానాన్ రుచిరాభిదానాన్ సంశ్రద్ధధానాన్ జగతః ప్రధానాన్|
నానావిధాన్ రుచిరాభిదానాన్ దదర్శ తస్యాం పురియాతుధానాన్||15||

స|| తస్యామ్ పురీమ్ జగతః ప్రధానాన్ బుద్ధిప్రధానాన్ రుచిరాభిదానాన్ సంశ్రద్ధధానాన్ నానా విధానాన్ రుచిరాభిధానాన్ యాతుధానాన్ దదర్శ||

In that city Hanuman saw intellectuals who were sweet in expression who had faith in religion, who were pre eminent ones in the world, heroes of different kinds, as well those who follow good practices.

ననన్ద దృష్ట్వా స చ తాన్ సురూపాన్ నానాగుణానాత్మగుణానురూపాన్ |
విద్యోతమానాన్ స తదానురూపాన్ దదర్శ కాంశ్చిచ్చపునర్విరూపాన్||16||

స|| సః సురూపాన్ నానాగుణాన్ ఆత్మగుణానురూపాం విద్యోతమానాన్ తాన్ దృష్ట్వా సః ననన్ద | తదా కశ్చిత్ విరూపాన్ అనురూపాన్ చ దదర్శ ||

Seeing radiant handsome ones with many virtues, whose appearance reflected their virtues Hanuman was happy. He also saw ugly and thiose with similar forms too.

తతో వరార్హాః సువిశుద్ధభావాః తేషాం ప్రియః తత్ర మహానుభావాః|
ప్రియేషు పానేషు చ సక్తభావా దదర్శ తారా ఇవ సుప్రభావాః||17||

స|| తతః తత్ర వరార్హాః విశుద్ధభావాః మహానుభావాః ప్రియేషు పానేషు చ దదర్శ| తేషాం తారా ఇవ సక్తభావాః సుప్రభావాః స్త్రియః దదర్శ||

He saw women adorned with choicest clothes, women whose minds are pure and attached to their lovers, and drinks . He also saw gentle ones among them shining brightly like the stars.

శ్రియాజ్వలంతీ స్త్రపయోప గుఢా యథా విహఙ్గాః కుశుమోపగూఢాః|
దదర్శ కాశ్చిత్ప్రమదోపగూఢాః యథా విహఙ్గాః కుసుమోపగూఢాః ||18||

స||ఉపగూఢాః శ్రియా జ్వలంతీః త్రపయా , తథైవ నిశీథకాలే రమణోపగూఢాః కాశ్చిత్ కుసుమోపగూఢాః ప్రమదోపగూఢః విహఙ్గాః యథా (స్త్రియః) దదర్శ||

Hanuman saw women embraced by their lovers being shy yet shining brightly. He also saw women adorned with flowers embraced by their beloveds being joyful like free birds.

అన్యాః పునర్హత్మ్యతలోపవిష్టాస్తత్ర ప్రియాఙ్కేషు సుఖోపవిష్టాః |
భర్తుః ప్రియా ధర్మ పరా నివిష్టా దదర్శ ధీమాన్మదనాభి విష్టాః||19||

స|| ధీమాన్ ( హనుమాన్) హర్మ్యతలోపవిష్టాః ప్రియాంగేషు సుఖోపవిష్టాః ప్రియాః మదనాభివిష్టాః అన్యాః భర్తుః ధర్మపరాH నివిష్టాః దదర్శ||
Intelligent Hanuman saw Rakshasa women on the terraces of the mansions sitting happily on the laps of their lovers overwhelmed with pleasure engaged in love. He saw others engaged in serving their husbands.

అపావృతాః కాఞ్చనరాజివర్ణాః కాశ్చిత్పరార్థ్యాః తపనీయవర్ణాః|
పునశ్చ కాశ్చిచ్చశలక్ష్మవర్ణాః కాంత ప్రహీణా రుచిరాఙ్గవర్ణాః||20||

స|| అపావృతాః కాఞ్చన రాజివర్ణాః పరార్థ్యాః తపనీయవర్ణాః పునశ్చ కాశ్చిత్ కాన్తప్రహీణాః శశలక్ష్మవర్ణాః కాశ్చిత్ రుచిరాంగ వర్ణాః (దదర్శ)||

He saw some of golden hue without veil, some altruistic shining with polished gold, some pale looking separated from their husbands , and a few of attractive complexion.

తతః ప్రియాన్ప్రాప్య మనోభిరామాః సుప్రీతియుక్తాః ప్రసమీక్ష్య రామాః|
గృహేషు హృష్టాః పరమాభిరామాః హరిప్రవీరః స దదర్శ రామాః||21||

 

స|| హరిప్రవీరః తతః గృహేషు ప్రియాన్ ప్రాప్య మనోభిరామాః సుప్రీతియుక్తాః ప్రసమీక్ష్యరామాః పరమాభిరామాః హృష్టాః సః దదర్శ ||

In those houses that best among Vanaras, Hanuman saw some happy and delighted ones having obtained their husbands, also some ecstatic ones ecstatic on seeing the loved ones.

చన్ద్రప్రకాశశ్చ హి వక్త్రమాలాః వక్రాక్షిపక్ష్మాశ్చ సునేత్రమాలాః|
విభూషణానాంచ దదర్శ మాలాః శతహ్రదానామివ చారుమాలాః||22||

స|| చంద్రప్రకాశాః వక్త్రమాలాశ్ఛ వక్రాక్షిపక్ష్మాశ్చసునేత్రమాలాః శతహ్రదానామ్ చారుమాలాః విభూషణానామ్ మాలాః చ ||

He saw rows of faces radiating like Moon, rows of eyes with sidelong glances and graceful lashes, many wearing lovely ornaments resembling flashes of lightning.

నత్వేవ సీతాం పరమాభిజాతామ్ పథిస్థితే రాజకులే ప్రజాతామ్|
లతాం ప్రపుల్లామివ సాధుజాతామ్ దదర్శ తన్వీం మనసాభిజాతామ్||23||

 

స|| (పరంతు) రాజకులే ప్రజాతామ్ పరమాభిజాతామ్ సాధు జాతాం ప్రఫుల్లాం లతాం ఇవ తన్వీం పథి స్థితే సీతాం న దదర్శ||

(But) He could not see Sita the one born in a noble royal family, a delicate one like creeper, following the right path.

సనాతనే వర్త్మని సన్నివిష్టామ్ రామేక్షణాం తాం మదనాభివిష్టామ్|
భర్తుర్మనః శ్రీమదనుప్రవిష్టామ్ స్త్రీభ్యో వరాభ్యశ్చ సదా విశిష్టామ్||24||

స|| సనాతనే వర్త్మని సన్నివిష్టాం రామేక్షణాం శ్రీమత్ భర్తుః మనః మదనాభివిష్టాం వరాభ్యః స్త్రీభ్యశ్చ అనుప్రవిష్టాం విశిష్టాం తాం న దదర్శ||

He did not see a lady with mind fixed in her husband, a lady of beautiful eyes, a lady abiding by the eternal good path compared to the wives present there.

ఉష్ణార్దితాం సానుసృతాస్రకంఠీం పురా వరార్హోత్తమ నిష్కకంఠీమ్|
సుజాతపక్ష్మామభిరక్తకంఠీమ్ వనే ప్రవృత్తామివ నీలకంఠీమ్||25||

 

స|| ఉష్ణార్దితాం సానుసృతాస్రకంఠీం పురా వరార్హోత్తమ నిష్కకంఠీం సుజాత పక్ష్మాం అభిరక్త కంఠీం వనే అప్రవృత్తాం నీలకంఠీం ఇవ తన్వీం (తాం న దదర్శ)

He did not see the lady shedding hot tears, whose throat is choked with incessant tears, whose neck was earlier wearing costly ornaments , who has beautiful eyelashes, who has sweet loving voice, who was earlier wandering in the forests.

అవ్యక్త రేఖామివ చంద్ర రేఖామ్ పాంసుప్రదిగ్ధా మివ హేమరేఖామ్|
క్షతప్రరూఢా మివ బాణరేఖామ్ వాయుప్రభిన్నామివ మేఘ రేఖామ్||26||

 

స|| అవ్యక్త రేఖాం చంద్రరేఖామివ పాంసుప్రదిగ్ధాం హేమ రేఖాం ఇవ క్షతప్రరూఢాం బాణరేఖామివ వాయుప్రభిన్నాం మేఘరేఖామివ (స రామ పత్నీం న దదర్శ)

She would be like an invisible ray like the rays of the moon, like a streak of gold invisible being covered with dust, like the scar of a superficially covered wound caused by an arrow, like a flake of cloud swept away bt the wind.

సీతామపశ్యన్ మనుజేశ్వరస్య రామస్య పత్నీం వదతాం వరస్య|
బభూవ దుఃఖాభిహతః శిరస్య ప్లవఙ్గమో మంద ఇవా చిరస్య ||27||

స|| వదతాం వరస్య మనుజేశ్వరస్య రామస్య పత్నీం అచిరస్య అపశ్యన్ ప్లవంగమః దుఃఖాభిహితః చిరస్య మంద ఇవ బభూవ||

Not being able to see the wife of Lord Rama who is the best one among those who are good at speech, Hanuman hit by grief became slow for a while .

ఇత్యార్షే శ్రీమద్రామాయణే ఆదికావ్యే వాల్మీకీయే
చతుర్వింశత్ సహస్రికాయాం సంహితాయామ్
శ్రీమత్సుందరకాండే పంచమస్సర్గః ||

Thus ends the fifth sarga of Sundarakanda in Ramayana, the first ever poem of mankind composed by Maharshi Valmiki.
